My Greatest Hoddy XI

My Greatest Hoddy XI

Ashley Leat18 Mar 2020 - 12:01

Our super selection committee chose their greatest Hoddy XI

Over the winter months we gathered three Hoddy legends to select their combined greatest club XI.

The selection committee - Chairman of Selectors Barry Hellewell plus Goose and Aidan met over a jar or two whilst they finalised their best side.

We had some selection policies -
They had to have played for the club for at least 5 years.
Played at their best or near best whilst with us.
Not have been from parts foreign.

THE FINAL XI

Rob Walters. (Hertfordshire).
Probably the best home grown (joined as a colt) the club has had. His record speaks for itself. Destructive batsman (who has scored more hundreds?), reliable economic and effective 'spin' bowler and brilliant catcher.

Neil Amies. (Surrey second XI)
'Bomber', who was one of the most 'competitive' players I ever played with. Was a destroyer of fast bowling, but could play spin as well. A wicket taking off-break bowler who spun the ball miles and very good all-round fielder.

Richard Ellis.(Middlesex,Gloucester and Oxford University).
I think, the most naturally talented player we have had at Hoddy. Robin Marler, the Sunday Times cricket correspondent at the time described 'Trellis' as the next England Captain when he came down from Oxford. That never happened, life got in the way, but Trellis was the best. Nobody could bowl at him when he was in the mood.

David Hughes.(Hertfordshire)
'Hughesie was just an excellent all-round cricketer, good captain and top bloke. One of the few to leave us and prosper elsewhere as he did at Bishops Stortford. Scored big hundreds and bowled some crucial spells.

Sam Davies (Hertfordshire)
A scorer of big hundreds, who could build an innings, and a fast bowler who could bowl outswing at top pace on his day (I recall seven in the slips on one occasion!) and fielded very well too.

Nick Gandon (Oxford,Hertfordshire and Lincolnshire)
Hoddy Legend. Taken for granted but an extremely effective all-round batsman. Good in a crisis and good when quick runs were needed. Although he preferred to open, could bat anywhere. Dreadful bowler of the most flighted of filth.

Mike Hollow (Essex Second XI and Leyton Orient professional footballer)
Mike, who captains the side and keeps wicket was a consummate all-round cricketer who could adapt his game for every circumstance. He captained with skill and empathy and got the best out of every one he played with.

Ruan Premadasa (Hertfordshire).
'Ru', who joined us from Stort CC, was, in his youth, a very quick bowler. A destructive batsman (nicknamed 'Ruan' your figures by Mark Everett the then Hertfordshire left arm spinner) and wonderful fielder. He had many decisive bowling spells and stand-out innings.

Steve Coleman (Hertfordshire).
'Verbal' was a left-arm spin bowler of great skill and no mean hand with the bat. Started with us bowling medium pace over the wicket but when he converted to spin became a very accomplished all-round player

Frank Wilkinson.
'Wilko' played for Hoddy all his career. He bowled very accurate fast medium swing and his figures suggested that he should have played for the County for years but Hoddy was then an unfashionable club and his talent was never properly rewarded. Could also hit the ball into the next county!

Peter May.
'Daisy' Bowled a 'heavy' ball with accuracy, pace and seam movement. He was the last bowler I can remember who took a hundred wickets in a season. Always gave a hundred per cent and could also bat.

12th Man
Rodney Norville
Could have been our best ever player had he been with us in his prime but 'Rodders' was into his forties when he joined us.
